Getting to Lakeside: Active Travel and Transport

At Lakeside Nursery and Primary School, we’re committed to promoting healthy lifestyles and reducing our environmental impact. One of the ways we do this is by encouraging active travel. This includes walking, cycling, scooting, and using public transport where possible.

Working Towards the Modeshift STARS Award

We are proud to be working towards the Bronze Modeshift STARS Award—a nationally recognised scheme that celebrates schools that champion sustainable and active travel. By encouraging our pupils, parents, and staff to think differently about their journeys, we aim to reduce car use, promote healthier lifestyles, and build a more environmentally friendly school community.

Why Active Travel?

Active travel helps pupils arrive at school alert, healthy, and ready to learn. It also:

• Reduces traffic and improves air quality around the school
• Promotes independence and confidence
• Supports physical and mental wellbeing

We’re working closely with families, local authorities, and transport providers to make travelling to school safe, simple, and sustainable.

What Our Pupils Say: Travel Survey 2025

We recently carried out a pupil travel survey, and here’s what we found:

The results show that some of our pupils already use active or sustainable modes of travel, but there’s room to improve! Our goal is to help more families choose healthy and eco-friendly travel options.

The orange bar graph displays the preferred modes of travel to school among children. As part of our learning, we explored the benefits of active travel — such as walking, cycling, or scooting — and how it positively impacts our mind, body, and the environment. After reflecting on this, we made a pledge to improve our travel choices, aiming to adopt healthier and more sustainable ways to get to school.

Travel Routes to Lakeside School

We are located in Deepcut, and there are several convenient ways to reach us:

By Bus

• The Stagecoach Bus 11 and Bus 1 serve the local area, with stops within walking distance of the school.
• Check the Surrey County Council website or the Stagecoach app for up-to-date timetables and routes.

By Bike or Scooter

• Local cycle paths connect Deepcut to nearby residential areas including Frimley Green and Mytchett.
• We have secure bike and scooter racks available on site.
• Remember: helmets are recommended and visibility gear is a plus, especially in winter months.

Park & Stride

For those who live further away, consider parking a short walk from school and walking the last 5–10 minutes. This helps reduce congestion around the gates and supports a calmer, safer environment.
